Much is said about the positive effects of CBD on humans, but not everyone knows about its use in treating animals! Today we will focus on the most faithful human companions, or dogs.
To date, limited research has been conducted into the effects of cannabis use on pets. One of the first studies published in the American journal Pet Behavior Science is about the relief of epilepsy seizures. They were carried out on a small sample, giving CBD twice a day for two months. Dogs were different in terms of age and race. It turns out that dogs react to cannabis in a way similar to human.
The results are based on reports from the owners, where most of them said that the treatment improved the condition of the dog. The animals slept longer, barked less during the day and showed less aggression towards strangers, and above all, epilepsy attacks were much milder.
The above finding leads to the conclusion that CBD oil can help restless dogs. Because of anxiolytic properties, many dog owners use CBD oil to calm their animals. This is especially useful for dogs who have been harassed, dogs with separation anxiety and those who have been placed in new places with other animals.
Last year, a separate study found that CBD could relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis in dogs. The results of the study were published in the Frontiers magazine, which describes how cannabidiol oil can alleviate the symptoms of this disease.
Researchers at Cornell University studied 22 dogs with osteoarthritis – a condition characterized by inflammation caused by deterioration of muscle tissue connected to the bone joints – and administered different doses of CBD oil from cannabis.
During the experiment, the researchers relied on licensed veterinarians as well as pet owners to document the state of pain and activity of each dog. The study “showed that CBD oil increases comfort and activity in the home environment for dogs with osteoarthritis” – the authors of the study wrote.
The researchers did not observe any undesirable side effects of CBD-centered treatments as opposed to the use of popular anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that can cause kidney and intestinal problems.
Why is this research important …?
The interest of pet owners in the potential benefits of CBD in different cases – from arthritis to anxiety and epilepsy – is increasing.
At the same time, when more research concerns potential uses of medical hemp in humans, other recent studies have confirmed reports of the benefits of cannabis to animals. For example, a preliminary report from Colorado State University has shown that CBD can reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures in dogs with epilepsy by up to 89 percent.
In turn, the Canadian company received the government’s permission to test pet food with a CBD infusion as a way to alleviate anxiety among dogs, as Newsweek reports.
Of course, not all cannabis components affect animals in the same way as humans. But this and other recent studies give the owners of animals eager for alternative treatment options a certain relief, showing that cannabis can in fact bring beneficial effects in treatment without serious side effects.
Currently, we are constantly following the next tests on treatment of quadrupeds with CBD oil and we are already planning to create a series of hemp products for your pooches. In the meantime, we invite you to our online store and test our products with a hint of strawberry, vanilla and other flavors.
We also encourage you to share in the comments, your stories and tips for other dogs.
